Let’s Get Cosy – The Joy of Colder Weather

I secretly love the colder weather. Despite thriving in warmer temperatures, there’s just something special about this time of year that I adore. Summer might be gone and past, but the real season of warmth is only just beginning.

For those of us prone to seasonal affective disorders, the declining daylight can often prove challenging. The shorter days mean we can very rapidly start to struggle; mere weeks ago we were basking in sunlight and warmth but are suddenly plunged into dark days and cold nights. Autumn provides a sanctuary of calm, an antidote to the harsh weather and dull conditions that sneak up on us ever so quickly.

We bring light indoors with candles and fairy lights, and make up for the lack of heat with soft blankets and cosy knitwear. We distract from the approaching winter by celebrating the harvest, enjoying the plethora of vegetables available roasted to perfection, blended into warming soups or carved into shapes to decorate dark doorways.

Throughout Spring and Summer we exist with the world around us as it is, but in Autumn we make it our own. We bring the best bits of the outdoors in, collecting seeds and plants to eat, enjoy or decorate. Cooler temperatures mean we have to plan ahead when venturing outside, meaning comfortable layers topped with decorative hats, scarves and gloves are a must. I think we look our best at this time of year, snuggled under softened fabrics, jewel toned to match the changing leaves around us.

We get to experience the world at it’s most beautiful too. Just as the leaves are preparing to fall away to reveal the stark winter, they put on the most fabulous display of red and orange, before forming golden carpets to line the pathways we walk everyday. The days may be shorter, but the light is spectacular. The hours surrounding dawn and dusk glow with a warmth that only appears at this time of year, bathing our surroundings with a spectacular radiance that makes even the most uninteresting alleyways gleam with a mysterious beauty.

There’s a childlike excitement in the air too, the most exciting festivities of the year are approaching, but there’s plenty to enjoy before we get there. Every stroll becomes a joy with crunchy leaves to kick through. Festive candles mean our homes have never smelt so good, and seasonally spiced food and drink makes October’s palate so much more exciting than usual.

Although the darkness setting in so early can take some time to readjust to, make the most of the excuse to stay in, snuggle up and enjoy your favourite homely ventures. Delight in the cold, brisk mornings by walking somewhere new and collecting conkers or golden leaves. Embrace the season as it stands, a colder, ever darkening time, yet one with the possibility of being cosier than ever!

  • Winter is my favorite season. Autumn not so much, but if it’s cold and clear it can actually be very nice. I’m the kind of person who likes shorter days and early nights.

I’m such a summer lover and only this year I’ve realised that everything that fascinates me about autumn is indoors. Reading, candles, tea and baths is what I like, freezing my nose and fingers off – not so much 😀
