With October a mere day away, I think it’s safe to say we are in the season of pumpkin spice! Be it in a latte, baked treats or the classic Pumpkin Pie, it’s a flavour that’s becoming easier and easier to find, which is good news if you’re a fan! It’s definitely no where near as common as it is in the USA yet though, but I definitely feel like we’re getting there.
The flavour you’re used to doesn’t actually have pumpkin in it at all, but is rather the blend of spices used to complement pumpkin when cooking with it, and the good news is, it’s super easy to make it at home. So if you’re looking to bake with pumpkin, or just spice up a regular bake, try this spicy blend of festive flavours!
It’s a blend of 5 spices easily found at most supermarkets. I decided to make a large jar ready blended because I bake with it a lot at this time of year, and love having the flavour on hand to add to recipes, or get creative with drinks and snacks! To make it you will need Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Allspice and ground Cloves. Nice and simple!
Mix together: 2 tsps Cinnamon, 1 tsp Nutmeg, 1 tsp Ginger, 1/2 tsp Allspice, 1/2 tsp Cloves, and scale up or down accordingly. Stir carefully with a spoon, or a miniature whisk if you have one. I used about 4x that mix to fill my jar.
This will last for ages in an airtight jar, so try and choose one with a good seal like this clip-top one. Make a cute label with some washi tape and a sharpie, and you’re good to go, it couldn’t be easier!
Try adding your mix to hot chocolate, pancakes, cupcakes or anything you fancy! If you’re looking for seasonal baking inspiration, try my Pumpkin Spice Brownie Cookie Bars!
