My 2016 felt rather overloaded. I worked hard, I did lots of things and had plenty of good times amongst the bad, but the overarching theme throughout was one of busyness, manic schedules and generally rather complicated days. The world as we know it has become crowded and busy and it’s often hard to avoid that. We live in a fast paced culture where leading a fast paced, fully occupied life has become glorified, and that somehow you can’t be successful if you’re not spending your days at 100 miles an hour, and I’m not sure I agree with that.
A Simple 2017 is my antidote to this. It’s a personal project to focus my year ahead and my time, to create the life that I want to be living. This year, I am going to uncomplicated my life, time, home and possessions, and focus on the little things that really matter. I am going to slow my pace and take more time to do the things I love and want to do. It feels like a very positive change too, it’s all about the things I want to be doing and things I want to do more often, rather than being about stopping things and cutting things out.
I’m excited to cook more, in turn advancing in my cooking skills and embrace the simple joys of fresh, homemade food. I’m really looking forward to spending more time outside, spending less time online or being distracted by work and the internet. I’m excited to explore my local area, meaning more walking, exercise, and better fitness. I can’t wait to have a good spring clean, take stock of what I have and donate anything I don’t love or use regularly to people who would have more use for it. This means more space at home, less clutter and a more pleasant environment. I want to develop the skills I already have, bettering myself but equally not complicating my free time by starting new things. I want to practise the piano, develop my calligraphy and handwriting, crochet more hats, and focus on those simple yet lovely tasks, all the things that make life great. I’m excited to share it with you too, and in turn continue to develop my skills and love for writing.
It’s been my intention for a while now to simplify my life. I’ve been slowly getting there too, but realised I need more focus. There’s an awful lot of noise online about minimalism in life at the moment, which often ends up as fairly contradictory. Over the past year, I’ve read about pretty much every ‘simple living’ trend I could find online. It’s become fairly obvious that many of us long for this simplicity, but can’t seem to be able to find the way to get there. Rather ironically our social feeds have been overloaded with hundreds of articles on how to achieve a minimal home and therefore a stress-free existence, yet none of them seem to be that magic fix. Spoiler alert – I’m not sure there is one. I don’t think there can be a one-size-fits-all solution for tidying up our busy lives, but I do think there are plenty of things we can be doing to help ourselves out. I’m going to be discussing and exploring some of these over the next few weeks and sharing them on here, posting a few tips and tricks that I have found to be actually helpful.
I’ve started a little hashtag to share how I’m simplifying my 2017, as well as sharing simple joys and loves, reminding me to embrace the little things in life. I’d love if you’d join in too in sharing your year – just use the tag #ASimple2017 .
So here we go, this is me taking the first steps in simplifying my life, heading forward positively and making this year the best it can be. Welcome to a simple 2017!
