A Minimal Makeup Bag

Over the course of the past year or so, I’ve been making an effort to try and simplify my life. I started out at home, trying to shrink down the possessions I owned and make a little more space, and have since moved onto other areas which are slowly but surely feeling more calm and organised. Something that I realised quite early on that would need some attention was my approach to beauty and makeup. I love beauty products, my inner girly girl loves nothing more than playing with makeup or picking up a pretty new lipstick, but in practicality can take up a lot of room at home, and a lot of time in the day.

Owning lots of makeup meant that I’d feel the need to use as much as possible, creating more of a complex morning routine, and in reality, lots of it going to waste as there just simply wasn’t time to use it up before it went out of date. I realised a simpler beauty routine and therefore more time in the mornings, was the way forward. I’ll share more on my de-stashing process at a later date, but today will show you what’s going on my face at the moment.

I currently have dry, dull skin, with a fair amount of acne scarring and the odd blemish here and there. After cleansing and toning, the products I use are primarily to stop the dryness, and to try and keep things as stable as possible without making things too complicated. I start with The Body Shop’s new Vitamin E Essence Lotion, a light, watery lotion, it’s not enough by itself but it’s a good base. Next up is their Moisture Protect Emulsion, with an SPF 30+ , for obvious reasons at this time of year. My moisturiser is their Drops of Youth cream; I know I’m not quite the target anti-ageing market just yet but it’s doing a great job at restoring bounce and life after long term medication left my skin rather dull.

My little secret weapon is Mario Badescu’s Rose & Aloe facial spray. I have 3 or 4 of these dotted around so there’s always one within reach. I use it to tone my face, set my makeup, wake me up in the mornings, calm me down at stressful times and any time I need a little pick me up. Absolutely adore this stuff!

The makeup part is where things get really simple. If I’m feeling like I need a bit of warmth and colour, I use Bareminerals’ Compexion Rescue as a foundation, but most days recently I’ve been skipping this step. I use their Stroke of Light under my eyes which does an amazing job of making me look more alive, fill in my brows with the gel part of Benefit’s Brow Zings and line my eyes with Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink. I sweep on a little of Nars’ Orgasm and finish with mascara, currently Tarte’s Gifted mascara. Sometimes I’ll sub in a bit of bronzer or use the powder section of the Brow Zings to add a little eye-smokyness. It takes all of about 5 minutes and it all fits in a little makeup bag I can throw in my handbag. My everyday ‘look’ therefore isn’t too over the top, but just gives me a little confidence boost with smaller eye-bags and bolder lashes. I found that heavy bases and concealers were causing more spots than they could hide, and although I have had to brave going out with blemishes on show, my skin is a lot clearer without being covered up. I’ve been following this beauty routine for a few months now and I’m loving how quick and simple it is, and feel my face is much happier for it!

  • Loving these photos lady! It’s nice to see a makeup bag with just as much skincare as makeup, I think it’s the more important bit! And this makeup bag is just too adorable for words!

I can totally understand that, I was like that but found so often I’d buy new products and then didn’t like them or use them. It took a while to find a set of products I absolutely love but now I have, I don’t want to change it 🙂 x
